It is home to nine and a half million people, and is an international hub for finance, commerce, industry, technology, telecommunications, and transportation.

But Marcus Hunley is an ambitious man, and he hopes to make a second successful transition to another career. He loves technology, and wants to break into that field. He is currently studying database theory and design and hopes to become a database administrator, or DBA.
As Marcus Hunley is learning, a database administrator is responsible for the administration of all activities in an organization’s production environment as it pertains to databases on each database server. A DBA is, in short, responsible for database integrity. A DBA must develop and enforce Content Management System (CMS) database standards, guidelines and operational policies and procedures; review its physical structures; and review performance, maintenance and utilities associated with each structure, among many other responsibilities.
Some DBAs need special skills because of unique ways the database is being used in a given environment. Increasing feature sets in popular database products have steadily increased the number of tasks Marcus Hunley will have to master, as he pursues his goal of DBA certification.
